Thoughts on Addiction
From “The Jerusalem
Walk 2004” (Rydholm)
Addiction takes many forms in our culture. It takes the
form of over working, self-destructive eating patterns, frivolous
spending, gambling, computer obsessions, latte cravings and indulgence
in substance abuse. Addiction is not so much about the
lack of willpower as it is a symptom of an unmet need. Indulgence
is a form of self- medication. We try to fill spiritual
voids with quick fixes that simply do not replace our deepest
longings as human beings.
As human beings we are hardwired to need
intimate connections with others and with God…connections involving mutual
honesty, true giving and receiving. We experience life
abundant, true purpose and love though such connections. When
we don’t have real relationships with God or with each
other we are bound to feel empty and in need of diversions or “placebos” that
promise to fill the void. Our addictions take root in these
voids.
As a culture of people preoccupied with the accrual of material
possessions we take an honest look at our closest relationships
and focus on opening our hearts to God & others in a quest
to secure the attachments our spirits really need. This
involves forgiveness. This involves more than a resolution
regarding self-deprivation, or a season of willpower. It
involves humbling ourselves and admitting that we need God and
others, that we can’t go it alone. It is a journey
into trust, contrition and vulnerability. When we humbly open
our hardened hearts to receive all that relationship and God’s
love have to offer our healing begins.
