When to wear a mask:
- any dusty or misty farm setting
- in the field during pollen season
- in the field during harvest
- in confined animal spaces
Masks won’t keep out toxic fumes:
fumes require something more
- ammonia (manure)
- hydrogen sulfide &
- methane (manure)
- carbon monoxide (fuel)
- pesticide vapors
What you should know about lethal fumes...
- They are often undetectable...Don’t count
on being able to smell them!
- Levels can (and should) be checked before entering
suspect enclosures (confinements)

Wear an S.C.B.A. (Self Contained Breathing
Apparatus)
- When disturbing manure sludge
- When entering a confinement of animals disturbing
their own manure sludge
- When entering pre-vented silos
